This second edition is an illustrated history, mostly wood
engravings, of all types of Printing Presses used in the 1800's. In this
book are over 480 illustrations, including 25 Hand Presses, 135 Platen
Presses and 55 Lever Presses from 194 manufacturers. There are over 150
new illustrations than were shown in the first edition of 1978. There is
also a chapter on miscellaneous equipment, from inking balls to steam
engines.
This book contains the largest number of antique printing presses ever
shown in one volume. A careful study of these many rare wood engravings of
Hand, Cylinder, Platen, Lever, Lithographic and Rotary presses reveals
both the subtle and major changes each manufacturer made to enhance his
machine's productivity and printing quality. Never before has the printing
historian had such a comprehensive resource at his disposal. This work
truly captures the engineering technology of a bygone age.
The author has spent over 30 years gathering and compiling this largest
collection of printing equipment illustrations and advertisements to date.
Anyone interested in early industrialization will enjoy looking at the
images in these advertisements, noting the manner in which cast iron, ink
and type were used to promote these mechanical marvels.
